Mark Melancon (1-1) earned the win after tossing a scoreless top of the 10th, while Pirates starter Francisco Liriano surrendered two runs and six hits over seven frames. The 24-year-old gave up three runs on a season-high 10 hits in seven innings Tuesday at Washington. Walker however was stranded at second base. “The guy made a good play. It was good to see”.

Starling Marte got three hits and scored three times for Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh Pirates’ Jung Ho Kang (27) steals second ahead of the tag by Atlanta Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons in the first inning of a baseball game in Pittsburgh, Sunday, June 28, 2015. “We’re all ticked off. It’s not just me”. His 2.63 ERA would be the second-best of his career over a full season, trailing only his 2011 campaign with the Pirates.

“It could be a season changer”, Frazier said.

If you’re asking me (which nobody ever does), I would probably send Polanco back down to AAA, expect him to be a man about it, and let him get some every day at-bats and hope he can work some things out with the coaching staff down there. Pittsburgh responded with five runs immediately after McCutchen’s injury en route to an 8-4 win in which Pedro Alvarez, Francisco Cervelli and Jordy Mercer each had a pair of RBIs.

Jason Grilli used to earn lots of saves and draw plenty of cheers at PNC Park as he once served in the role as the Pirates closer. The Reds wasted plenty of chances to end the night earlier. Cincinnati had at least one baserunner in all but two innings, including two on with no outs in the 11th only to come up empty.

Pittsburgh right-hander Rob Scahill (2-4) allowed the game-winning home run.

It was a much-needed boost for the Pirates (41-32), who improved to 14-6 against teams in the National League East, as they had been losers of five of their last six games and had fallen from four to eight games behind first place St. Louis.

“It’s definitely been a long road”, the 27-year-old Villarreal said.

“If you gave it your all, these people are on your side forever more”, Grilli said. Jon Lester worked just four innings and suffered the fourth loss in his last six starts.

Cameron Maybin hit a two-out single advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on Nick Markakis’ roller through the hole on the right side. Jimmy Rollins had two hits, an RBI and a run for the Dodgers.

1 run, 1 hit, 0 errors, 0 left on.

McCutchen has never been a fan of the armor worn at the plate by some of his contemporaries because he was anxious it would limit his effectiveness. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound righthander fired 10 of his 15 pitches for strikes in taking on four hitters. “When he’s in competition, there really hasn’t been any issues with fatigue or getting loose”, Price said.

Pirates left-hander Jeff Locke (4-4) recorded his first 13 outs by way of strikeout or ground balls. “We’re trying to get him back to feeling normal in between starts”.
