Also on stage are stakeholders, and individuals whose lives have been impacted by the gun violence.

President Obama announced executive actions Tuesday, meant to curtail gun violence.

Taylor says licensed gun stores, which already do background checks, have historically benefited from gun control discussions.

Obama became teary while talking about the 20 children killed in a mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary school in 2012. As the President said, “Sympathy is not enough to stop gun violence”.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders said in a statement that he, too, would keep Obama’s actions in place if he’s elected. But a lot of things don’t happen overnight. “Gun violence has outpaced automobile accidents as a leading cause of death”, said National Urban League President Marc Morial.

It said that Mr Obama’s plan was “ripe for abuse” but did not say what action it would take against it.

“In fact, New Jersey’s 2002 “Childproof Handgun Law” has spurred much of the outcry over attempts to sell smart guns in the US, because it said that once “personalized handguns are available” anywhere in the country, all handguns sold in New Jersey must be smart guns within 30 months”.

The measures would tighten rules on who must register as a gun dealer, narrow a “gun show” loophole that allows buyers to dodge background checks, and crack down on “straw purchases” of weapons through intermediaries.

The FBI report in December showing record gun sales on the big holiday shopping weekend and news reports detailing a spur in sales prompted by both mass shootings and gun control efforts all belie the fact that gun sales in many areas are down.

The plan goes on to say that the Defense, Justice, and Homeland Security departments “must prepare a report outlining a research-and-development strategy created to expedite the real-world deployment of such technology for use in practice”.

“I reject that thinking”, Obama said.

Hoping to give the issue a human face, the White House assembled a cross-section of Americans affected by searing recent gun tragedies, including former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

Obama readily conceded the executive steps will be challenged in court, a prediction quickly echoed by Republicans. Ted Cruz launched a fundraising pitch telling supporters that “Obama wants your guns”.

The vice president has participated in interviews with stations from Charleston, South Carolina, Hartford, Connecticut, and Roanoke, Virginia, among others. Other provisions aim to better track lost or stolen guns and prevent trusts or corporations from buying risky weapons without background checks.

Members of Obama’s staff were also wiping away tears as the president spoke as members of Congress sat silently in the room.

And her campaign highlighted Republican candidates’ criticism of Obama’s comments on its website, warning that a GOP president would undo Obama’s actions. “And you haven’t heard him go to Chicago and really speak out about this issue”.

“His words and actions amount to a form of intimidation that undermines liberty”, said the speaker of the House of Representatives, Paul Ryan.
