Pixar’s “Inside Out” and “The Good Dinosaur” nominated for Best Animated
A Globes nomination can give a show, film or actor not only a bump in audience, but an edge in Hollywood’s crowded awards season. Denying acting noms to the cast of “Spotlight” – even though the movie is generally considered a front-runner for Best Picture at the Oscars, the Screen Actors Guild awards, and in the Globes’ Best Drama category.

Universal’s hit N.W.A biopic directed by F. Gary Grey apparently did not lay down a beat the HFPA could groove with.
The Best Motion Picture – Drama category has “Mad Max: Fury Road”, “The Revenant ” and “Spotlight” in competition with “Carol”, whereas the Best Director – Motion Picture trophy contenders include Alejandro G Inarritu (“The Revenant”), Tom McCarthy (“Spotlight“), Ridley Scott (“The Martian”) and George Miller (“Mad Max: Fury Road”) apart from Haynes. The versatile British actor was robbed – end of story. HFPA thankfully didn’t forget about “Spy”, throwing the nod for Best Picture and Best Actress for Melissa McCarthy.
– Actor, Movie or Limited Series: Oscar Isaac, “Show Me a Hero”; Patrick Wilson, “Fargo”; Idris Elba, “Luther”; David Oyelowo, “Nightingale”; Mark Rylance, “Wolf Hall”. Sound appealing? The show is up for best comedy, as well as a nomination for lead actor Gael Garcia Bernal.
Ellie Kemper – The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt star was sheer comedy gold on the Netflix series.
There’s plenty of room for Mirren in the Supporting Actress race because her chief competitor, Rooney Mara, was rightfully bumped to Leading Actress status.
Actor Ben Mendelsohn also received an invite to the January 10 Golden Globes ceremony for his supporting role in the TV series Bloodline.
Central Falls native Viola Davis was also nominated for the NAACP Image Awards’ Entertainer of the Year earlier this week.
Tom Hanks – His Bridge Of Spies performance couldn’t get across to HFPA voters. It is an exciting time in the film and television industry, of course, as many will now get to see how their hard work might have paid off in terms of fame and notoriety and not just a paycheck. But her sharp, caustic comedy series seems tailor-made for the Globes voters. Also surging was Adam McKay’s starry finance farce “The Big Short”, which earned four nominations, including best picture, comedy, and nods for Steve Carell and Christian Bale. While the film categories saw a good mix of nominees from major and independent film studios, the television groups saw a noticeable lack of nominees from major television networks like NBC, ABC, CBS, and FOX, nominees that usually dominate the awards season.
Carey Mulligan – There was no vote for the Suffragette actress today. Perhaps it was the movie’s riches-to-rags, Cannes-to Lifetime road. “We are all honored to carry on the legacy of Charles Schulz and are thrilled to see audiences around the world embracing the film and that a whole new generation of fans are discovering the characters”. That’s worthy of Best Supporting Actress? No.
Add in a couple of Hollywood A-listers and you get The Big Short movie, based on the book by Michael Lewis. Maybe if Ricky Gervais had been in it …

– Actress, Drama: Taraji P. Henson, “Empire”; Viola Davis, “How to Get Away With Murder”; Robin Wright, “House of Cards”; Caitriona Balfe, “Outlander”; Eva Green, “Penny Dreadful”.
