Planned Parenthood Closes Four Clinics In Iowa

Planned Parenthood said on Thursday it would shutter four of its 12 clinics in Iowa as a result of a measure backed by Republican Governor Terry Branstad that blocks public money for family planning services to abortion providers. Planned Parenthood is NOT a “health care” provider.

Planned Parenthood says it will close down clinics in Sioux City, Bettendorf, Burlington and Keokuk.

“I am concerned about the health and well-being of the people in Iowa who now can no longer turn to their trusted health care provider”, Dr. Raegan McDonald-Mosley, Planned Parenthood’s chief medical officer, told HuffPost.

Planned Parenthood says they are not expecting to close any other locations in Iowa or Nebraska.

But, now because Iowa has violated Medicaid rules by blocking Planned Parenthood, the state will lose the entire $3m. If they choose, they can also take a severance package, Phillips said.

FQHCs outnumber Planned Parenthoods by at least 20-to-1.

Despite facing a $131 million budget shortfall this year, Iowa lawmakers chose to forgo $3 million in federal funding by discontinuing the federal Medicaid family planning waiver.

Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains announced this week that it will close six clinics in Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico.

She also ascribed some of the troubles to the federal Affordable Care Act, which “impacted the way we operated, the way we bill things”.

Now, there are approximately five states that have one abortion mill left: Kentucky, Mississippi, South Dakota, North Dakota and Missouri. For example, it’s still unclear whether only abortion providers will be excluded, or if health care clinics and groups that are only affiliated with abortion providers could also be kicked out.

“This is good news for families in the state of Iowa”, Maggie DeWitte, director of Iowans for Life, said in a statement. Iowa’s law is the latest move in a calculated plan by antichoice Republicans to cut off access to safe abortion and to eradicate the social safety net, particularly for women, people of color, and low-income people.
