Planned Parenthood funding in Louisiana in jeopardy

In an order requiring Arkansas to respond to a motion for class certification by October 28 – two weeks from the day of the order – U.S. District Judge Kristine Baker denied both the plaintiffs’ request that she expedite the matter and the state’s request that she allow more time for a response.

Since the anti-choice Center for Medical Progress has released a series of deceptively-edited videos smearing Planned Parenthood, multiple clinics across the country have been the targets of “terroristic” arson attacks.

Herbert, a Republican, has said he was offended by the callousness of the discussion.

Also discussed in the videos, which were filmed undercover, are what researchers are charged for the tissue and parts. The money is designated for programs targeting sexually transmitted diseases and for sex education programs. Without court intervention, the funding is expected to end early next week.

She noted that Rudofsky failed to explain the necessity for conducting further inquiry before she decides the class-action question, and has already “explored in detail in written discovery” the women’s use of Planned Parenthood services and their use of other providers. Individuals should have the right to support health organizations, including Planned Parenthood.

Agenda Item 39, adding the support of Planned Parenthood funding to the city’s legislative agenda, was placed on the consent (or uncontested) agenda less than a week before the council meeting, not even going through a committee hearing process like most of the other agenda items.

But following arguments for a permanent injunction until the case goes to trial, Judge Clark Waddoups told attorneys for the state and Planned Parenthood that the TRO will remain in effect until he rules.

In making his order, the governor claimed those services could be provided by other groups and the state was pursuing that approach to prevent a stoppage of service.

“Planned Parenthood of Utah is correct”, he said. Nor did anyone mention the fact that Planned Parenthood is technically a private organization, whose public funding has taken up a significant amount of national debate and gridlocked the United States Congress.

A federal judge said he will decide by Monday whether to block Gov. Bobby Jindal’s attempt to cut off state Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood’s Louisiana clinics. It also receives money through federal contracts, fees from clients, insurance and contributions.
