Planned Parenthood Suing Texas in Fight for Medicaid Funding

Washington is one of two states (along with California) in which women, once they have chose to have an abortion, are asked whether the fetal tissue may be used in research, and one Planned Parenthood clinic has an agreement to supply tissue to the University of Washington School of Medicine’s Birth Defects Research Laboratory.

The budget cut decision comes as a video of Planned Parenthood officials selling fetal tissues from aborted babies was released by anti-abortion groups.

The fight between the State of Texas and Planned Parenthood looks to be far from over.

McQuade called Schaefer’s effort “political grandstanding” and said Schaefer bullied MU and physicians into not providing what she called a critical health care service. “Texas is a cautionary tale for the whole nation-with politicians in Arkansas, Alabama, Ohio, and Louisiana trying to do the very same thing”, Richards said in a statement. Planned Parenthood is asking for the same protection in Texas.

After a Texas state law stopped abortions in 2013, home abortions have risen, according to NBC News.

Republican state leaders have long worked to cut taxpayer funding from Planned Parenthood, which provides abortions at some of its Texas clinics, but none that receive state or federal dollars.

Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas did what’s been inevitable for a couple of weeks and sued the state of Texas in federal court Monday.

Texas’ attorney general did not immediately comment. Funds are scheduled to stop on December 8.

Now, Missouri’s only abortion clinic is in St. Louis, which performs both surgical abortions and pill-induced ones; women in western Missouri can visit a Planned Parenthood facility in the Kansas City suburb of Overland Park, Kansas. And let’s be clear: “That is illegal and it’s a violation of federal law”, said president Cecile Richards of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, as reported by Reuters.

Planned Parenthood’s case against Texas hinges on the allegation that the state is breaking its legal obligation to its more than 13,500 Medicaid enrollees, who must be allowed to seek medical care from whichever qualified providers they choose. “We can not continue imposing barriers to care on women”.

Three days after receiving notice of their pending exclusion from the Medicaid program, Planned Parenthood was served with massive document requests and subpoenas for patient records, doctors’ notes and test results. On Monday, the USA 7th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that a Wisconsin law requiring abortion providers to have admitting privileges at local hospitals is unconstitutional.
