Play Books updated to improve comic reading experience

As Google’s lead product manager for Play Books Greg Hartrell told me earlier this week, this is the first update to Play Books that was specifically meant to improve the comic-reading experience. But it looks like Google is trying to cater more closely to those customers, as Play Books will soon have new options to make reading and discovering comics easier. As is typical for Google, however, these updates aren’t officially live for everyone yet.

Google Play Books, while a great way to read your favorite novels on your Android devices, wasn’t always that well suited for comic books.

Also – at long last – Google’s comic collection will be organized into volumes, issues, and editions – in a far more intuitive way on the Google Play store.

The first new addition is the ability to scroll vertically in landscape mode. “But navigating a comic can be tricky on a small phone or tablet screen”.

If you are a comic book fan then you are likely quite aware that the app marketplace-for both Android and iOS devices-has been largely devoid of comic readers, even though there have been lots and lots of e-reader options. The store is getting its own dedicated comics section that will feature “beautifully curated series pages” to organize all the comics-related offerings together.

As for the new recommendations and curated series pages, Google says the aim here is to simply make browsing and finding interesting comics to read easier.

Google adds, “Google Play offers binge-worthy comics from all the major publishers, including DC Comics, Marvel, Image, IDW and Dark Horse”.
