Play suspended for the day at PGA Championship

“In my head I’m hoping the scoring goes the same it did the last time the PGA Championship was here (in 2005) when the leaders come under pressure on the golf course and maybe some guys behind, namely me, get a bit of momentum early on and can push on”.

Fans leave the course during a weather delay in the third round of the PGA Championship golf tournament at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J., Saturday, July 30, 2016.

Dustin Johnson lines up a putt on the fourth hole during the first round of the PGA Championship golf tournament at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J., Thursday, July 28, 2016.

The PGA Championship was halted because of thunderstorms Saturday, raising the possibility of a second straight Monday finish in a major championship at Baltusrol.

Halfway leaders Jimmy Walker and Robert Streb were not due out until nearly 3pm local time (8pm BST), the pair having equalled the lowest halfway total (131) in US PGA history.

Kevin Kisner and three-time major victor Padraig Harrington went one better with rounds of 65 to finish five and four under respectively, while Francesco Molinari amazingly finished with six straight birdies in a 68.

Kevin Kisner of the United States and Ireland’s Padraig Harrington took advantage of Saturday’s favorable playing conditions to make strides up the leaderboard at the PGA Championship. Only 37 of the 86 players who made the cut completed the third round, and 10 players had yet to tee off.

So far this year each major champion won one for the first time: Danny Willett in the Masters, Dustin Johnson in the U.S. Open and Stenson. “You are going to hit a lot of fairways”.

“Tee to green was good but it was just pathetic when I got on to the green”, McIlroy said after signing for his 69, a five-shot improvement on the first round.

WOBURN, England (AP) – Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn took the Women’s British Open lead at tree-lined Woburn, almost four months after blowing a late lead in the first major championship of the year.

The course was so susceptible that Harrington didn’t feel as though he played all that well and still played bogey-free for a 65.

Mickelson made the cut with one shot to spare on Friday, rallying from an opening tee shot that went out-of-bounds and onto a side street.

“Hit the right shots at the right time and any of the shots that I didn’t hit well didn’t do me any harm”, he said.

“I would be surprised it wasn’t”, added Mickelson who finished his round with a 68. “I think somebody is going to break that 63 record in these next two days”. It was just an average day, as I said. The greens are pristine. His partner Marc Leishman was less fortunate and the Aussie will have to return early on Sunday to make a 10-foot putt for a 66. Thursday was the day I played well. “I think we do what we need to do to try and finish the championship. That’s the nature of the game”.

An afternoon rain storm suspended play at 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, and though it initially was announced the delay would only be for an hour, the downpour continued for two more hours saturating the course. They are soft, so you can get the ball very close. Baltusrol’s strength is measuring the right bounce on the greens because of the contours.
