Play suspended until Sunday at PGA Championship

In an interview with Amanda Balionis following Mickelson’s third round of the PGA Championship at Baltusrol on Saturday, Mickelson said the course is “gettable” and that a 62 or lower is coming.

Play in the 98th PGA Championship has been halted until Sunday morning, PGA officials announced Saturday after thunderstorms had stopped Saturday’s third round for more than 3 1/2 hours. Ikeda, seventh on the Asian Tour Order of Merit, mixed his card with five birdies and two bogeys to trail leaders Jimmy Walker and Robert Streb by six shots with his two-day total of three-under-par 137. More rain was in the forecast.

Everything clicked for Kisner, who also moved carded a 65 to get to 5 under on Saturday. Padraig Harrington also had a 65 and was at 4-under 206.

Otherwise, another Monday finish loomed, and that was only part of the unpredictable nature of this PGA Championship.

The PGA of America, however, laid out a plan to get the tournament completed on Sunday (Monday morning AEST), saying the final round would begin at 8:40am local time in nine-minute intervals, staying in the same pairings as round three, starting from the first tee.

Kisner and Harrington showed a glimpse of what figured to be low scoring Saturday because of the soft conditions from two spells of rain earlier in the week. “I think that there’s that 61 or 62 out there that I was probably trying to chase a little too hard”.

“I think if you had given anyone else in this field my tee shots this week, they would have been up near the top of the leaderboard”.

Streb posted the 30th round of 63 in a major on Friday.

British Open champion Henrik Stenson and runner-up Phil Mickelson each did it two weeks ago at Royal Troon.

“Tee to green was good but it was just pathetic when I got on to the green”, McIlroy said after signing for his 69, a five-shot improvement on the first round. It’s nice when you score better than you play. It was just an average day, as I said. Rickie Fowler had 45 feet for birdie on the first hole.

The adage in golf is that players can’t win a major on Thursday, but they can lose it. It was wonderful, the best I played Thursday, is the worst score I shot.
