In just under two years, Square Enix Ltd., today announced that the community of FINAL FANTASY® XIV now exceeds 5 million registered accounts globally – across Europe, North America, Japan, and China. “As long as it does not fit perfectly, it should not be included in the game, we think”, Tabata stated. With that expansion, of course, comes new players.

It should also be noted that Final Fantasy XIV is less MMO and more story-driven JRPG with multiplayer support.

There are some controversial additions to the mobile version of the game.

The app lets you gather cards from all of the major Final Fantasy games, and use those cards to play Triple Triad against both AI and human opponents online.

CNET reports that the version has slightly better graphics compared to the original 1997 PlayStation version.

For the uninitiated, Final Fantasy VII is a role-playing (RPG) game that follows protagonists Cloud, Barrett and Tifa as they embark on an adventure against the evil company Shinra and the super-soldier Sephiroth. We are not sure why Square Enix would do such a thing but this is definitely a welcome change for impatient mobile players.

The figures for World of Warcraft dropping to about half of what its numbers used to be has really hit a chord with some believing that Square Enix has the opportunity to step in and be the next big, bad MMO on the block. Square Enix Ltd. also has a global network of leading development studios such as IO Interactive™, Crystal Dynamics® and Eidos Montréal. Final Fantasy XIV is one of the few MMOs left on the market to still charge a monthly subscription fee, which makes this all the more impressive. The iOS port of Final Fantasy VII follows the other classic games which have already been ported to mobile which includes Final Fantasy I to Final Fantasy VI.
