Play underway on middle Sunday at Wimbledon

Play has resumed on the outside courts at Wimbledon after a rain delay of almost two hours.

And people with grounds passes that provide access to smaller courts also are eligible for refunds of 50 percent – except for anyone who bought those tickets at turnstiles after 5 p.m.

Play on Centre Court, the only venue at the All England Club with a retractable roof, has been continuous, with Stan Wawrinka facing Juan Martin del Potro.

Three-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic lost the first set of his third-round match against Sam Querrey 7-6 (6).

Kvitova and Makarova started the match on Friday, but rain suspended play.

American John Isner said he was happy to play his third round clash against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Sunday if necessary with more rain expected on Saturday.

Novak Djokovic is in trouble at Wimbledon, losing the first two sets to Sam Querrey.

Bouchard is leading 6-3, 2-1.

In both 2004 and 1997, two days of play were completely rained off in the first week.

Roger Federer has ended British qualifier Marcus Willis’ feel-good Wimbledon run.

Willis was the lowest ranked qualifier to reach the second round at a Grand Slam since 1988.

Kuznetsova, a two-time Grand Slam champion, has reached the quarterfinals here three times, but the last time was back in 2007. His third-round opponent will be sixth-seeded Canadian Milos Raonic, who hit 25 aces in a 7-6 (5), 6-4, 6-2 win over Andreas Seppi. Djokovic lost the first two sets of the third-round match, 7-6 (6), 6-1, before the final rain storm came. He also slipped and fell to his back while moving up to the net in the concluding tiebreaker but appeared to be OK.

Radwanska has made it to at least the semifinals at Wimbledon in three of the past four years.

He is halfway to the first calendar-year Grand Slam for a man since Rod Laver did it in 1969.

The first set of missed tournaments happened between 1915 and 1918, and the second between 1940 and 1945 – the progress of the First and Second World Wars, respectively. In 1938, he completed the only true Grand Slam other than Laver’s pair.

Fans will get to see top-seeded and six-time women’s champion Serena Williams, who plays in the day’s second match on Centre Court against Germany’s Annika Beck.

Williams, a six-time Wimbledon champion, lost a set for the first time at this year’s tournament.

“Obviously I love having that Sunday off but I’m a little behind in my matches, so I guess I had to play an extra day”, Williams said.

American Coco Vandeweghe (VAN’-duh-way) defeated seventh-seed Roberta Vinci 6-3, 6-4 to reach the fourth round.

The backlog then was such that of the 376 matches that should have been played by the end of Saturday, only 262 were completed. More rain is forecast throughout the day, however. That leaves Wednesday’s schedule packed with a mix of first- and second-round contests.

Six-time women’s victor Williams was facing fellow American Christina McHale in a second-round match, with seven-time men’s champion Federer up third against British player Daniel Evans in the third round. He gives tennis lessons at a club in central England and was only recently talked out of giving up on his goal of making it on the pro tour by his girlfriend.

There is tennis being played at Wimbledon – on one court, anyway. “It is the one opportunity we have to water the courts thoroughly, an important step in helping to ensure they start the second week in the best possible condition”.
