Players gird themselves for a long and wet PGA

Jimmy Walker and Robert Streb share a one-shot lead at 9-under-par 131 heading into Sunday at the 98th PGA Championship, but neither set foot on the course Saturday as thunderstorms drowned out the afternoon wave at Baltusrol Golf Club.

We just might get through 36 holes on Sunday at Baltusrol.

Stenson made soft bogeys with his putting on the 12th and 13th holes, and he narrowly avoided another bogey at the 14th.

“No, I’m going to stick to my game plan”. Garcia had a 3-over 38 and was at 3 over for the tournament, while Watson had a 35 and was even for the tournament.

Gary Woodland, one of the Tour’s long hitters, went from his worst hole to his best in a hurry.

Mickelson sliced his opening tee shot onto a nearby street and into a residential yard before settling for a triple bogey.

But US Open champion Johnson, who had finished no lower than ninth in six of the last seven majors, finished among the bottom 10 players on nine over, while McIlroy looked likely to scrape into the weekend until a poor second to the par-five 18th and a pair off duffed chips added up to an ugly bogey six and a round of 69 – three over for the tournament.

Third-ranked Jordan Spieth is tied for 18th at 1-under and Mickelson is tied for 42nd at 3-under.

The Scot’s grouping had already been delayed by rain.

McIlroy, who played with Mickelson, messed up the final hole to miss the cut for the first time in eight starts at the PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy’s year at the majors ended in bitter disappointment when he missed the cut at the US PGA Championship. Play had to be stopped Friday morning for almost an hour because of moderate rain that left the two fairways on the far end of the course filled with too much water.

Baltustrol received an inch of rain overnight, and the rain was steady into Friday morning. Some of the fairways had too much water and play had to be stopped.

Jordan Spieth, Sergio Garcia and Bubba Watson teed off almost an hour after they left the practice range.

The first order of business for the U.S. Open champion is making the cut. Soon after he predicted the major-championship record score of 63 “will be broken” by someone this weekend.

“I was able to fight back and be patient from there on out, start to make a birdie here or there”, he said. He saw McIlroy’s woes and had faith they are only temporary. The two-time LPGA Tour victor missed the cut in the ANA Inspiration to start the major year, and tied for fourth in the KPMG Women’s PGA.

Robert Streb led the way, even if hardly anyone noticed.

A day after matching the tournament record and falling a stroke short of the major championship mark, the South Korean player had three birdies and two bogeys to reach 11-under 133.

He stood outside the clubhouse as a steady rain fell, knowing he had to make up ground to avoid missing his first cut in almost 18 months on the PGA Tour.
