Software had an especially good month with $345.5 million in revenues, which is up 21 percent year-over-year.
Superdata shows us how the digital market fared in June. And it doesn’t look like game sales are going to slow down.
Software sales of games on discs grew 19 percent to $354.1 million. However, the month was a win for consoles as a whole, which saw an eight percent increase in sales over previous year.
Among consoles, PlayStation 4 once again claimed the top spot, outselling Xbox One by a healthy margin, despite the Xbox’s strong bungle offerings.
Finally, before we get into the grit of the NPD report, we always like to point out that these figures are only a snapshot of a wider more dynamic industry.
“Sales of Arkham Knight slightly exceeded October 2011 sales of Batman: Arkham City, which is remarkable considering the difference in hardware install bases”, said Callahan.
Arkham Knight sold the most on PlayStation 4.
Upon the release of “Arkham Knight” to the PC platform, a myriad of issues, bugs and glitches led to a massive gamer backlash against Warner Brothers and developer Rocksteady. That’s due to a lack of enthusiasm and lack of diversity in new games, analysts say, at least those titles that are purchased from U.S. retail outlets like GameStop and Amazon, which is the only segment NPD tracks.
The Elder Scrolls Online also did well, selling 138,000 digital copies. And, Lego: Jurassic World continues to illustrate Jurassic World’s popularity and the power of the Lego brand in gaming. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, 5.
Both The Witcher 3 and Splatoon maintained their presence in NPD’s software top ten from last month, ahead of strong incumbents from 2014 including Minecraft and Grand Theft Auto V. Apparently Warner Bros. was aware of the issues months before launch but pushed ahead with it anyway. Interactive Entertainment, which had four of the top 10 games. In a statement, Sony said the PS4 also dominated software sales.
Without that bundle, it’s quite possible that we’d have had another Xbox One month.
