PlayStation 4 gets major update with HDR

Even if you take the original Playstation 4 out of the picture, you are still left with two consoles to choose from. After updating users will see an HDR settings in the Video Output Settings. If you do have an HDR set, however, the new feature works with both gaming and entertainment content that supports HDR. Another useful update involves the PS4’s Quick Menu, which now gives quick access to music and Spotify.

This is one of the main features of the upcoming PS4 Pro console which will arrive in November, but Sony shocked gamers and the tech world by announcing that PS4 users will also get it for free. You can now use the Quick Menu from the PS4’s dashboard while playing a game to quickly activate the PlayStation Music option that allows you to play music from Spotify, including activating a playlist without having to open up separate menus.

The What’s New and content info sections has also been refreshed by Sony with the 4.0 update, resulting to a different manner of presenting information.

In light of last week’s new PS4 consoles reveal, Sony also added a feature that would allow you to transfer data from one PS4 console to another via a wired LAN connection. Beyond being able to pause, play, skip, and shuffle from the Quick Menu, the section will also recommend playlists based on the game being played. Some of the updates that will feature on the PS4 Pro include: 1080p streaming for Share Play, 1080P streaming for Remote Play, 1080p 30/60fps live broadcasting on Youtube, High Dynamic Range (HDR) and 1080p 30fps live broadcasting on Twitch. Sony says that the feed will show larger images as well as integrate an activity feed with recommendations on who to follow, people you may know, etc.

Finally, Sony is making it easier to transfer all your data from your current PS4 to another (like the Pro, should you opt for the new model).

We’ve given a similar redesign to the content info screen, which you can access by pressing down on a game tile while on the home screen. There are no games now available for PS4 that offer HDR, and none of the video streaming apps on the console, such as Netflix or Amazon Instant Video, offer HDR either.
