Pledge grows to boycott Target over bathroom policy

The AFA says Target should provide a unisex bathroom instead.

On its website, the association warns that Target’s bathroom policy will enable sexual predators to get better access to their victims.

Target did not respond to MSNBC’s request for comment on Friday about calls for a boycott.

The American Family Association claims more than 162,000 citizens have signed its #BoycottTarget pledge since launching the petition 24 hours ago.

“If they’re going to be having women come to men’s restrooms, I won’t be going to Target to shop, unless and until that changes”, Gohmert said, according to The Hill.

“You have, again, shown that your stores are inclusive and meant to be a safe haven, and I intend to repay your loyalty with my own”, one customer wrote on Target’s Facebook page.

Target’s statement, published on Tuesday, read: ‘Inclusivity is a core belief at Target. And we think the average Target customer is willing to pledge to boycott Target stores until it makes protecting women and children a priority. The group’s motivation appears to stem from the myth that predators will use the policy to prey on young women and girls in women’s bathrooms. It’s something we celebrate.

Just this week, the retailer happily announced that transgender customers would be welcome to use the bathroom that best matches their gender identity – a reinforcement of guidelines that had been in place for years.

Target is following in the footsteps of Kroger, which also recently clarified its policy on gender-specific bathrooms.

Religious conservative boycotts rarely succeed, and there’s little indication that Target is in danger of caving on this issue.

Deutsche Bank stopped its planned addition of 250 jobs in North Carolina after that state passed legislation that requires transgender people to use the public bathrooms that associate with one’s gender at birth.

“If Target is truly committed to a solid policy that’s good for business-for everyone-and if they’re truly committed to the transgender community, the company will spend the money for a unisex compromise”.
