Pluto has 11000 feet high, young ice mountains
NASA has released the next batch of images from New Horizons’ historic Pluto flyby – and this group is mesmerizing, especially the discovery of mountains.

The scientists believe that these mountains formed more than 100 million years ago, but are still very young in comparison to the 4.56-billion-year-old solar system. This picture was taken when the spacecraft was 478,000 miles from Pluto’s surface, about an hour and a half before it came closest to Pluto at 7,800 miles.
Geological activity is common on icy worlds similar to Pluto, such as the moons of Jupiter and Saturn.
Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Area residents gathered at the Kopernik Observatory & Science Center in Vestal on Wednesday night to view the first photos of Pluto, and its moons, from NASA’s New Horizons space probe.

However, scientists are stunned by the obvious lack of craters on Charon. Some scientists think this is an indication of the presence of a significant amount of ice water on the dwarf planet’s surface.
And Pluto, long considered the farthest planet from the Sun before it was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006, has never before been explored. En route, a slingshot pass round Jupiter shaved three years off the flight time, corrected New Horizon’s trajectory and captured video pictures of a volcanic eruption on one Jovian moon, Europa.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday congratulated Nasa for its success in space exploration as its spaceship sent data and photos of Pluto.
That suggests the close-up region, which covers less than one per cent of Pluto’s surface, may still be geologically active today, researchers said.
Cliffs jut out for hundreds of miles across the planet, which is also scared by several canyons, some of which are six miles deep. The group started the push to explore Pluto.
(Bowman) “We’ll probably end up pulling it apart and say this part resembles that on this world, but there’s nothing like it.” “They would stand up respectably against the Rocky Mountains,” said John Spencer, a planetary scientist working on the mission.

From that information, and New Horizons’ other instruments, scientists can begin to analyze Pluto’s geography and atmosphere, among other things. Some of Tombaugh’s ashes are aboard New Horizons.
