PM leaves tomorrow for Laos to attend ASEAN, East Asia Summits
Modi will be attending the annual India-Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) annual summit on September 7 and the East Asia summit on September 8. Taking into account that this will be the first Asean Summit after the summit in Kuala Lumpur, and given the importance of realising Vision 2025, the agenda of the plenary session is mainly to discuss the progress of the implementation of Asean 2025: “Forging Ahead Together or also known as Asean Vision 2025, a roadmap for the region’s continuous community building efforts”, he said.

On East AsiaSummit, the Prime Minister said, it is the Premierforum for discussions on the challenges and opportunities before the AsiaPacific region.

“During the summit, the leaders will also issue a Joint Leaders Statement on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP)”. The master plan, which succeeds the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity 2010, focuses on five strategic areas: sustainable infrastructure, digital innovation, seamless logistics, regulatory excellence and people mobility.

2017 will mark 25 years of India’s dialogue partnership with ASEAN, and several commemorative activities will also be announced by PM Modi to celebrate the occasion.

Trade between India and ASEAN stood at $ 65.04 billion in 2015-16 and comprises 10.12% of India’s total trade with the world.

The ASEAN leaders will meet the heads of state, government of ASEAN dialogue partners including India, China, Japan, Korea, Australia and the US.
India, being a founding member of the EAS, is committed to strengthening the EAS and making it more effective for dealing with contemporary challenges.

The Asean leaders also spoked about territorial disputes, maritime security and armed conflicts.
