The port can connect various countries in the region, including India and Afghanistan, to Central Asia, Caucasus and Eastern Europe, Rouhani added.

Today both the countries have signed twelve important agreements, including a historic deal to develop the strategic port in Chabahar on the Persian Gulf nation’s southern coast.

His major engagement tomorrow consists of restricted talks with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, delegation- level talks, signing of agreements between both nations.

India and Iran on 23 May 2016 signed 12 memorandum of understandings (MoUs) and agreements in various areas including building and operating the Chabahar port by India.

He visited the Bhai Ganga Singh Sabha Gurudwara and applauded the efforts of the Sikh community in Iran for preserving and spreading the culture and tradition of India.

“I also hope my Iran visit further cements cultural and people-to-people ties between India and Iran”, he tweeted after landing in Iran.

The two leaders chose to expand and upgrade relations between India and Iran from mere trade partners.

Mr. Modi, who will hold formal talks with President Hassan Rouhani on Monday, said he had indicated possibilities of cooperation in ports, fertiliser and petrochemical sectors during their meeting at Ufa. He said the port can serve as a point of connectivity to different countries. On his arrival to the country he was received by Iran’s Finance and Economic Affairs Minister Ali Tayyebnia at the Mehrabad International Airport.

PM Modi said India and Iran will consult each other closely and regularly on combating threats of terrorism, radicalism, drug trafficking and cyber crime.

The prestigious Chabahar Port project was visualized during the NDA regime, though it hibernated for quite long, mainly due to the slapping of global sanctions against Iran.

Baglay said India, Afghanistan and Iran would separately sign an agreement to set up a trade and transport corridor during Modi’s trip that will have Chabahar as the hub.

He made a great pitch for going beyond trade and make the economic relations more comprehensive.
