Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a two-day visit to Russian Federation for the 16th annual summit with President Vladimir Putin that will be aimed at expanding their agreements in a broad range of fields, especially nuclear energy, defence and hydrocarbon.

The summit talks between Mr Modi and Russian President will take place tomorrow.
Describing Russia as an “unwavering friend”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has underlined the strong bilateral relationship with India that spans the entire gamut of defence, nuclear energy, trade and culture.
He will hold “extensive deliberations with President Putin”, according to a statement posted on the website of the Prime Minister’s Office. On his arrival here, the Prime Minister was accorded a guard of honour at the Vnukova II airport amid light drizzle and overcast conditions.
During the previous summit, the leaders of the two nations had discussed largely about expansion of economic ties. “We do not at all doubt Russia’s commitment to see India as a permanent member of the UNSC”. “This provides us with the confidence that we can take forward our existing dynamic partnership”, he said.
“We had discussions with Russian Federation on the Eurasian economic zone and the FTA (free trade agreement) with them”. During Modi’s visit, the two countries are expected to sign agreements for units 5 and 6 of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu.
The visit will also include a visit at the Emergency Situations Ministry and a speech at a “Friends of India” event.
“We are also working together for joint manufacture of defense equipment and components in India under the Make in India initiative”, he added.
During his visit last week, Deputy PM Rogozin mentioned about opportunities for Indian companies in the Russian market on account of exit of several European and Turkish manufacturers in food products, textiles, clothing and other consumer durables.
Setting the tone for the visit, the Prime Minister, before his departure for Moscow, said Russian Federation remained one of India’s “most valued” friends in the world and that he was “very optimistic” about outcomes of the talks with Putin.
Stating that Russian Federation has been historically an important technology partner of India, Jaishankar said: “Whether it is in super-computing, whether it is in heavy engineering, satellites on the space side and even in the area of renewable energy we think we can do a lot”. Now, for the first time, private deals were being struck in front of leaders from the two countries, who egged on the signatories with claps.
