PM Modi offers India’s expertise to Tanzania as ‘reliable friend’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after his talks with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta here, also announced extension of concessional Line of Credit (LoC) of Dollars 44.95 million to the African nation to help it in development of small and medium enterprises and textiles.

The focus of the African tour is on deepening cooperation in areas of hydrocarbons, maritime security, trade and investment, agriculture and food.

Naik said he was ready to cooperate with Indian investigation agencies, but had so far received no communication from them seeking any information. Naik also said he would readily cooperate with any Indian investigation agency.

Kenya’s oldest newspaper and the second-largest in circulation, The Standard, has asked the Kenyatta administration to push India to open its doors to goods from Kenya.

“To tap into the energy of our 800 million youth, we have started a new campaign called Start Up India”, Modi said.

He said memorandum of understanding on Defence Cooperation signed by the two sides today would strengthen the institutional cooperation between their defence establishments.

The two leaders recognized the growth in vibrancy of people-level relations between the two countries that were encouraged by the introduction of e-tourist visas to Tanzania previous year.

Reiterating that India is one of the brightest spots in the world economy, he said Kenya is a land of strong opportunities.

In the talks, India agreed to share expertise with Kenya on space-based applications, weather forecast and disaster management support.

Modi’s agenda in Nairobi, aside from the talks and deals with Kenyatta and businessmen, includes a meeting with India’s huge diaspora in Nairobi, which controls a huge chunk of the country’s local manufacturing and service sector.

Modi arrived in Tanzania on Saturday from South Africa on the third leg of his four-nation tour of Africa. In 2013, an attack on the Westgate Mall in Nairobi left at least 67 people dead, including Indians.

South Africa and India hold enormous trade and investment potential that needs to be unleashed through closer strategic cooperation, said Zuma.

The pledges were, among others, setting aside 10 billion USA dollars for loans to African countries for implementation of various development projects, said Mahiga.

“India has changed a lot in last two years”. SA has the largest population of Indians outside of India.

“We must condemn those who give shelter to terrorists and use them as political instruments”, said PM Modi.

Earlier, the Prime minister was accorded a ceremonial welcome when he arrived at the State House in Dar-es-Salaam.
