Terming the negative impact of environment pollution as a challenge, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said there is a need to harness solar energy.
Modi said that when he goes to Russian Federation, “there is a thought in my mind that I have delayed the visit a bit”.
India and Russian Federation are also likely o sign a deal to fast track two more nuclear reactors for the fifth and sixth phases of Kudankulam energy complex in Tamil Nadu, The Hindu reported quoting sources.
New Delhi has turned to Moscow as the USA firm General Electric and Westinghouse, a US-based unit of Japan’s Toshiba, are still weighing an entry into India’s nuclear energy sector because of a law that makes reactor suppliers liable in case of an accident. He said the countries had a “robust partnership in the field of defense, nuclear energy, science and technology, and other areas”.
Modi and Putin would also be interacting with a group of Indian and the Russian CEO, and pursue them to step up their economies engagements in the other countries.
Prime Minister Modi will also meet Friends of India at the Moscow Expo Centre. “I am certain that this visit will substantially take forward the already strong people to people ties between our nations”, Modi added.
Talks are also likely to touch upon the purchase of five advanced S-400 air-defense missile systems by India, which the country’s defense-acquisition panel approved last week.
In Moscow, Modi will hold talks with Putin and Russian Premier Dmitry Medvedev, following which the two sides will sign an array of cooperation agreements in energy, finance, space and defence. “In both SCO and East Asia Summit, we can work together in advancing peace and prosperity in two major regions of the world, where we both have vital stakes”.
Defence discussions are expected to focus on joint production of helicopters, leasing of a nuclear submarine by India and construction of six new nuclear power plants in southern India. It will deepen economic & security ties with a valued friend, ” Mr Modi said in a tweet ahead of his visit for the annual summit.
“But while I don’t think they’ll expect us to criticise Turkey, the fact is our companies don’t have the wherewithal to fill the hole left by Turkey”.
Modi was to arrive on the evening of December 23, in time for a private dinner with President Vladimir Putin.
As some Indian manufacturers look to Western firms for the tie-ups needed to bring in technology and build locally, Reliance is forging closer ties with Russian Federation to jumpstart its nascent bid to develop a defence business from scratch.
