The news of the stopover was announced by Modi on Twitter: “Looking forward to meeting PM Nawaz Sharif in Lahore today afternoon, where I will drop by on my way back to Delhi”.
Nawaz Sharif and Nerendra Modi clasped their hands and hugged warmly and then both flew to Jatti Umra in a helicopter showing a rare scene of warmth. Modi was offered meals prepared in “desi ghee” with Kashmiri tea, mixed veg, kheer and palak paneer on the menu. Sharif also introduced his mother to Modi, who touched her feet.
“Our understanding is that when Modi was in the United States, he was encouraged very strongly by Obama to rethink his approach toward Pakistan”, the minister said. “The destructions sustained by Bosra represent a further escalation in the horror of war and must be stopped at once to allow the concerned parties to consolidate the agreement reached on the ground to preserve the irreplaceable heritage of Bosra”, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova said of the site containing Roman, Byzantine and Muslim ruins, including a magnificent 2nd century Roman theatre.
However, Foreign Secretary Aizaz Chaudhry, Pakistan’s Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif attended the meeting, Aziz said.
He said that any global issue can not be resolved with static approach and new ways must be explored to resolve the disputes, Radio Pakistan reported. While foreign minister Sushma Swaraj welcomed PM Modi’s announcement saying “That’s like a statesman. Padosi se aise hi rishte hone chahiyen (One should have such relations with neighbours)”. “There is no second opinion about the fact that in the second half or quarter of the century, Jammu Kashmir is the greatest sufferer as far as terrorism is concerned and therefore any process which seeks to restore peace in the subcontinent and the region, will certainly have the most important benefit for Jammu and Kashmir”, said the MP from the state.

On December 23, the neighbouring country had proposed talks between their foreign secretaries in Islamabad on January 15 to discuss all outstanding issues. Now Pakistan is waiting for India’s response for the same.
