Pochettino: Spurs deserved to beat Arsenal

Arsenal eventually leveled matters in the 76th minute when Mesut Ozil picked out Keiran Gibbs at the far post and the defender squeezed an effort past Hugo Lloris for his first ever Premier League goal.

“He gets in good positions”, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. “In these games you can never give up”.

The draw left Arsenal in second place behind Manchester City who have been held at backside membership Aston Villa earlier.

“You know you need to kill the game second half, there was a moment where we had the chance to score again, but in the end I thought it was brilliant, I congratulate the players”.

“With the way we played, and the chances we created, I think we deserved to win the game”, said former Southampton boss Pochettino.

Tottenham, unbeaten in the league since the opening day, is five points back in fifth and was the more aggressive team throughout the first half, with Erik Lamela shining as he harried the hosts who were bruised by a mid-week loss at Bayern Munich.

Full-back Danny Rose chipped a long ball over the Arsenal defence, with Per Mertesacker caught up field and Laurent Koscielny trying to play offside, which released Kane into the Arsenal penalty area.

However, in recent weeks, the genius of Ozil’s talent has finally come to the fore and less than two weeks ago, it was revealed that the German superstar now has the best games/assist rate in Premier League history.

“I hope it is nothing bad, but it does not look like it, because he says he is alright now”.

The France forward then glanced a free header wide from six yards following Ozil’s corner.

Gibbs ensured the points were shared in the 82nd north London derby but Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino wasn’t too downbeat after a grueling spell ahead of the two-week worldwide break.

Spurs then came within inches of doubling their lead when Eriksen darted into the right side of the Arsenal penalty area and his angled shot was deflected off Flamini and drifted across the face of goal, dropping just past the far post.

He told BBC Sport: “We played very well”. It was an unbelievable effort.

Gibbs scored his first league goal since March 2012
