Pochettino: That was one of Tottenham’s best performances this season

It could easily have already been more.

West Ham nearly responded immediately when midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate’s improvised bicycle kick diverted captain Mark Noble’s deflected shot onto the crossbar.

The momentum theirs, Spurs continued to threaten and within 10 minutes had doubled their lead.

England striker Kane, 22, had his second goal five minutes after the turn-around, collecting the ball from Christian Eriksen and driving home from the edge of the box. According to reports, the injured West Ham fan remains in the Royal London hospital having sustained minor injuries.

A win for either team today wouldn’t take them into the top four, but it would certainly take them closer to doing so.

Pochettino is proud of Tottenham’s reputation for promoting youth but believes his team’s progress means they can also lure proven quality as well as up and coming talent.

Harry Kane’s two goals, Toby Alderweireld’s header and Kyle Walker’s late strike was enough to beat their London rivals whose only consolation was a goal by Manuel Lanzini.

Spurs have not beaten West Ham at home since Jermain Defoe scored twice in a 3-1 victory in November 2012. Casually exchanging a one-two with Son that began outside the penalty box, the full-back masterfully bent the ball with the outside of his right foot into the bottom corner.

While not too many are interested in taking a chance on Caceres due to his recent indiscretions, West Ham are open to making a swoop for the defender and are hopeful of landing him for a bargain fee of around only £2million as his contract in Turin is set to expire at the end of the season.

This is the most promising Spurs outfit for many a year. Pochettino has got them bang on! If you are sitting that deep and are 20 metres facing the goal with none of our players surrounding them then sooner or later someone will make a mistake.

Pochettino’s revamping of the Spurs squad has been driven by a strong faith in youth, with the likes of Harry Kane, Eric Dier and Dele Alli all thriving under the Argentinian.

The Hammers have won at Arsenal, at Manchester City, at Liverpool and have been fantastic under new manager Slaven Bilic. These two sides were level on points heading into this match which, combined with the Hammers’ impressive away form, looked likely to provide a real tight contest. Maybe it was the best of the season, but it was certainly one of the best. The whole week’s training has been incredible so we went into the game just trying to put that out on the pitch and we have come out with a good result.

– Kyle Walker scored his first Premier League goal for Tottenham since December 2013 (v Manchester United). We are still very young and need to improve but it is important to keep the same mentality.
