Podcast: Heavyweight champ Deontay Wilder talks about making history

“The pressure is on Deontay because I just want to be a world champion”.

Of course when you punch as hard as Wilder does then the end can come at any time, but I see him using those height and reach advantages to keep Szpilka at bay with his jab and picking up a wide points decision without having to take any risks.

Also in attendance at Tuesday’s workout were local favorites and featured undercard fighters Julian Sosa (3-0-1, 1 KO), Ivan Golub (9-0, 7 KOs) and Amanda Serrano (26-1-1, 19 KOs), who will fight Erika Kalderas (11-1, 4 KOs) in a vacant WBO Female Featherweight World Title fight on Saturday night.

“It’s time to get back to the four-round king thing, knocking guys out within one to four rounds”, Wilder said. “I need one of those insane, ‘Oh my god, you see what happened, the world stopped kind of fight, get the chalk for murder scene, really knock out'”.

“We are both in a position now where we are both champions, we have titles, and I’m looking to unify the division”.

Al Haymon’s Deontay Wilder wanted Kathy Duva’s Glazkov as an opponent and, apparently, the deal was close to being finalized until Tyson Fury upset Wladimir Klitschko and the IBF stripped Fury for failure to sign on against his top challenger.

The champion is also odds on to win inside the distance, but Szpilka is tough so I’m going for a Wilder win on points which is a best of 11/2.

That fight wasn’t overly competitive after about the fourth round, with Jennings, a smaller heavyweight than Wilder known as a boxer and not a puncher, dropping the Pole in the sixth and finishing the job in the final round. Even in NY, where he’s yet to fight, fans were staked out at one of the many stops Wilder made during a whirlwind Monday press tour. But there are more belts that I want.

Wilder makes the third defence of his World Boxing Council crown while Glazkov and Martin meet for the International Boxing Federation title that Britain’s Fury dropped after defeating Wladimir Klitschko for his share of the throne.

Szpilka has the reputation of a rugged Polish brawler.

“I think Tyson [is more likely to fight me], even though he talks a lot I think he’ll fight”.

Andrzej Gołota had several shots at the title, but he never pulled it off. Fighters such as Tomasz Adamek and Mariusz Wach likewise missed out.

“Sometimes I visualise and daydream about that fight happening and I’m looking forward to coming to see my friends in the United Kingdom for that”. “I don’t know what his goal is but it is the flawless time for it. If any time is ideal, 2016 is the flawless year”. His last two took longer than he wanted, and that has him feeling a tad annoyed. “That’s going to be great”. In this case, though, matched as he is, good may be good enough to win a world title.

“He can say whatever he wants”. I’m convinced we’re going to have two memorable fights that will add to the great history of SHOWTIME. I want to be an undisputed champion.

“It’s an honor to fight at Barclays Center”.

Saturday’s line-up will be anchored by the television premiere of The Imitation Game, and the 30th Anniversary of Showtime Championship Boxing with the history-making night of four heavyweights meeting in two world championship fights, live from Brooklyn’s Barclay’s Center. “This is certainly an exciting way to kick off boxing at Barclays for 2016”.
