In doing so, this will create 3000 McDonald’s restaurants instantaneously into Pokémon Gyms, which have already proven to be regular stomping grounds for Pokemon Go players in the past two weels.
After experiencing server issues during its first weekend on sale in the United Kingdom, the game is once again failing to connect for many players.
The smartphone app has now been launched in more than 40 countries, including the U.S. and much of Europe, but Japan – where Nintendo started the mythical creature franchise 20 years ago – was kept waiting.
A man plays the augmented reality mobile game “Pokemon Go” by Nintendo on his mobile phone as he walks at a busy crossing in Shibuya district in Tokyo, Japan, July 22, 2016.
“We wanted to build a game that would inspire people to go outside, get exercise, discover new places and have fun with their friends”, game developer Niantic’s Chief Executive Officer John Hanke said in a video posted with the release.
The Japanese launch of the game on Friday morning included its first partnership with an outside company: fast-food giant McDonald’s.
Meanwhile, the servers are still down, so you’ll have to wait a while before getting back to your regular Pokemon Go habits.

Pokémon GO has finally released in Pikachu’s native home of Japan, much to the joy of Japanese trainers and Niantic’s bank account.

Amid widespread anticipation before the official release, the government issued a rare safety guide warning of the dangers gamers could face, from heatstroke to online scams. He was hoping to test his skills in a battle at a McDonald’s, but realized he had not reached a sufficient level to do so. “Keep your head up, look around, enjoy the world around you, and be safe”, he said.
