Pokémon GO will soon let businesses sponsor locations

According to the Financial Times, the network of virtual “portals” mapped to on-street locations in Pokémon Go will be similar to the one featured on Ingress, Niantic’s previous game. Do so here on iOS and here on Android.

The mobile app uses your phone’s Global Positioning System to determine where you are and then a Pokémon appears on your phone screen, which you can capture.

While it’s pretty easy to find stories of “Go” sending flocks of aspiring trainers to places where they really shouldn’t be trying to catch, Niantic already lets people flag freaky, inappropriate or risky hot spots.

Though the game is meant for fun, DCSO Lt. Glenn Daniel explained that everyone playing the game may not have good intentions.

Hanke said that the game will see improvements to its augmented reality technology and weekly updates for the massively multiplayer online game.

“Four male suspects in St. Louis, Mo., activated a lure module within the game and drew players to a secluded parking lot, where they allegedly robbed 11 players at gunpoint”, the report says. “Distracted game users might not be aware of their surroundings or use caution when entering into isolated areas”. Right now, most PokéStops and gyms are at neutral locations like statues, parks, and local landmarks.
