Misenga began to cry on Saturday as he told his story, which provided a rare upbeat moment in the hard run-up to South America’s first games. “I have two brothers, I don’t know what they will look like now”.

“What we have subsequently found is that the fire alarms had been silenced while they were carrying out maintenance on the building next door to ours”, she said. “I send my hugs and best wishes wherever you might be”.

Rio’s Olympics that open this Friday and run through August 21 are the first to include a team entirely of refugees, which includes ten athletes from four countries who will compete under the Olympic flag.

“Rio will show the world all that Brazil is capable of achieving”, acting President Michel Temer said.

“I can hardly believe I’m here with so many people listening to us”, he said.

Misenga was nine years old when he fled fighting in Kisangani in the Democratic Republic of Congo. But she’s in grief over losing her country.

There had been “numerous people” given approval to deactivate the alarms – now there would be just one, she said. “I represent all the refugees around the world”, he said.

Australia is one of the delegations that has prohibited its athletes and staff from visiting Rio’s hillside favelas – or slums. But that’s beside the point.

“There is no CC-TV in the village”, Chiller said.

Less than a year ago, Mardini was swimming for her life.

“And also when you go to Brazil to Rio, practice safe sex”, Chan said.

Anis fled Syria in 2011 to avoid being enlisted into the army, relocating to Belgium from Istanbul in October past year.

Misenga has been training under former Brazil national team coach Geraldo Bernardes, a veteran of four Olympics in a sport topped by only volleyball and sailing in terms of medals won by the country.

So the players from these countries who have the app are able to see a digital map of their surroundings when they visit Rio but not the gyms, Pokéstops and Pokémons – the soul of the game. “I hope in Tokyo in 2020 there will be no refugees and we will able to compete under our own flag”.

For Congelese Judoka Misenga, recalling the devastating toll that conflict has had on his family was too much. “At least now I can say I’ve survived a burning building”.
