Pokemon GO Guide: Everything to Know About the Upcoming Buddy System
It seems as though the size of Pokemon will be based on their actual size in the Pokemon universe, as opposed to the random height and weight that is assigned to them in Pokemon GO.

After data miners had discovered a Pokemon GO Buddy System earlier this week, developer Niantic went ahead and confirmed the feature this past Friday.
Although the Pokemon has despawned, it still shows up even though it is not already there, which could also be the reason the red message still pops up. The most typical advantage is obtaining sweets use to evolve the pokemon. One way that Pokemon GO will be evolving in an upcoming update is by the addition of the buddy system, which will allow trainers to travel with a Pokemon of their choice outside of its Pokeball. As any avid Pokemon GO players know, candy is a precious commodity in the game, as it is the only way players are able to evolve their Pokemon. The list includes Trading System where player can have duplicate Pokemons exchange for sweets, Player vs Player or PvP where players could face off with each other, Maps (in addition to PokeRadar) to enable players to navigate, track and catch Pokemon and the last item in the list is the Better Battling feature where players will be able to come up with a better strategy (offensive or defensive) right before the match.
Long story short, the pokemon will only accompany the trainer in “Pokemon Go” and try to gain some sweets when the player is walking in their respective city. Most of the Pokemons are only required to travel a distance of one to two kilometers, in order to get candy rewards. It all makes sense because it is impossible for Snorlax to be in the shoulders of the trainer in “Pokemon Go” while the player is walking.
According to Game Rant, there is an advantage if a trainer has a buddy Pokemon. If a Pokemon is already assigned as a buddy, then it can not be told to do other tasks within the game.
