Pokemon Go Has Made More Money Than Some Hollywood Blockbusters

The most interesting part of this achievement is that “Pokemon Go” was able to do that without any major paid advertising. Perhaps more shocking is Sensor Tower’s revelation that Pokemon GO has been downloaded 180 million times, with players spending an average of 32 minutes a day on the app – a figure that remains nearly completely unchanged from the average daily time spent on Pokemon GO during its launch week.

The results are as you’d expect: Pokemon GO has managed to come in ahead of five films released during the same period, slightly edging out Warcraft for the top spot on the charts. It has increased for more that $100 million from its income that was reported last August.

“Pokemon GO” surpassed the global haul of movies such as “Warcraft”, “Star Trek Beyond” and “Ghostbusters” and it is still continuing to earn more than US$4 million (AU$5.30 million) in worldwide net revenue each day. Downloads and daily users have dropped significantly in recent weeks, but the augmented reality game is a revenue engine. While the initial download of the app is free, “Pokemon Go” makes money through in-app purchases.

Sensor Tower illustrated Pokemon Go’s success according to an oft-used metric in the games industry: stacking it up against summer blockbusters.

Pokemon Go is probably the biggest thing to have hit mobile gaming this year and over the past month or so, it has become a craze all across the world due to the sheer inventiveness of the game. According to app analytics company Sensor Tower, Niantic’s Pokemon GO recently passed $440 million in revenue since its release back in July.

“Pokemon Go” should have staying power beyond that of a typical summer movie. Around 12 percent of the total number of smartphones in the US has Pokemon Go installed in it. Statistics indicate that users in the U.S. spend around 32 minutes as an average time they spend on playing the game.
