Pokemon GO on Tuesday released an updated version on iOS to reduce the number of data permissions it sought from Google account users. The fastest way is to open the App Store, click the Featured tab, scroll right to the bottom, tap your Apple ID and hit “Sign out”.
To say that Pokemon GO has been a triumph, then, is one of the rare occasions where such a lauded description doesn’t do its subject justice.
As Reeve points out, it’s unlikely that Niantic, the developer of the game for Nintendo, plans to do anything nefarious.
The Google fix in the Pokemon Go update came in response to a revelation that the game was asking for the entirety of people’s Google accounts, which some might see as a security risk that would allow hackers to access their Google accounts.
Earlier this week we reported that Pokemon GO’s worldwide rollout had been halted. No additional information has been collected by the app, and certainly won’t be going forward due to it’s new level of access.
Niantic is yet to launch Pokemon GO in Canada, Europe, and other countries.
