Pokemon Go’s Japan debut sends Nintendo shares climbing

A player’s captured Pokemon can be strengthened and used to fight those owned by other players, just like the other games in the Pokemon franchise. The company, which first brought Pokemon to America on its Game Boy platform in 1998, relies mostly on profits from its core console business.

Pokemon Go achieved a penetration rate of 6% of the US population in just 10 days, and Martin predicts that there will be around 20% penetration of the USA population at maturity.

Separately, Chinese billionaire Wang Jianlin’s (王健林) Legendary Entertainment LLC will team up with the developers of the popular Pokemon Go game to make a live-action film based on the creatures. The idea is to encourage you to travel around the real world to catch Pokemon.

Shares of related companies also rose, including electronic parts makers Hosiden, which Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group said may be producing an accessory for Pokemon Go, also rose more than 9 per cent.

Gamers in Japan, home of Nintendo Co.’s Pokemon, waited in vain on Wednesday for the launch of its smash-hit mobile phone game, amid media reports that the developers behind it had hit the brakes over concerns that manic demand would overload server capacity.

TechCrunch said the sponsorship would see McDonald’s 3,000-plus fast food restaurants across Japan become “gyms”, or battlegrounds, for Pokemon collectors.

Nintendo shares have more than doubled since the game was first released.

Nintendo, which holds stakes in Pokemon and the game’s developer Niantic, saw its stock nearly double through Thursday following the game’s debut in the US.

The warnings, by the National Centre of Incident Readiness and Strategy for Cybersecurity, included asking users to register with “cool names that are different from real names” and cautioning them against heatstroke as they walk around in the sun. As for Pokemon Go, the game already boasts a user base that is 10 times larger than the one Candy Crush managed to hold during its peak years. Niantic has issued a guideline requesting that users play the game safely. Elsewhere, there have been multiple reports of vehicle accidents and other mishaps because people were preoccupied with playing the game.
