Jackson (3-2) struck out seven and walked three while raising his career record against the Pirates to 10-3.

“If there’s a blessing in disguise of getting hit, it’s the fact that I got to deal with (Pirates pitching coach) Ray Searage every day for two months”, Vogelsong said. Today, he averaged just 12 pitches per inning. “I know I am a better pitcher because of being up here. He’s pounding the zone”.

Taillon displayed his entire arsenal by mixing pitches and got quick outs with his two-seam fastball.

“I’m just playing with pitch sequencing”. “He left it right there, and I put a good swing on it”. “That’s when the changeup played”, he said.

Taillon has been in the majors long enough that he doesn’t feel like a rookie any longer, even though he clearly is.

Friedrich, like Taillon, is a former first-round draft pick – and one of 13 starters the Padres have used this season.

Josh Harrison hit a leadoff double in the first off Friedrich and scored on David Freese’s single.

Freese added his second RBI on a two-out double in the third following Starling Marte’s single.

Harrison singled home a run in the fourth. Friedrich pitched a season-high seven innings in his last start August 5 vs. the Philadelphia Phillies, permitting four runs and five hits.

“He’s not ready to make that pitch in that situation yet because it’s going to come back over the plate and it did”, Green said. “We had to step up and get it done”.

Taillon will make start No. 10 Thursday afternoon against the San Diego Padres after going 2-2 with a 3.29 ERA, 43 strikeouts and only six walks in 52 innings during his first nine starts.

Pirates: C Francisco Cervelli left the game in the fifth inning with left wrist discomfort. Hei called the issue numbness and said it stemmed from tendinitis.

“The Pirates are a tough team to pitch against because they have guys who are threats all the way up and down the lineup”, Jackson said.

It was the fourth time the Padres had a straight steal of home this season, and the second by Jankowski.

Padres: Paul Clemens (1-2, 4.61 ERA) will make his third straight turn in the rotation as the Padres begin a three-game series in NY against the Mets. He has gone 2-0 with a 3.91 ERA in five starts with the Pirates this season and 6-3 with a 2.37 ERA in 16 starts for Indianapolis. Following the series finale, Pittsburgh has 15 of its next 19 games against teams now holding winning records, including road series with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the San Francisco Giants and the NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs. Blash scored on the play, and Bethancourt went on to second. After Alexei Ramirez fouled out, third baseman Jung Ho Kang misplayed Jackson’s hard-hit ball down the line for an error that scored Bethancourt, who was running on the play.Vogelsong also was effective in his first start following his serious injury, limiting the Braves to one run over six innings last Thursday in Atlanta.NOTES: The Padres brought up INF Nick Noonan from Triple-A El Paso and sent down INF Jose Rondon.
