“To do something that hasn’t been done in 30 years is an exceptional achievement”, U.S. Head Coach John Speraw said.

Italy also earned a spot in the Olympics, joining the USA and host Brazil in the competition next August.

The Americans edged the 2011 winners in all the major stats and had solid contributions across the board, with three players – Aaron Russell (16), Matt Anderson (12) and Taylor Sander (10) – reaching double figures in points. “I know my team is better so, we’ll try to prepare as well as possible and be ready for qualification”, he noted.

“The team was just tremendous in its ability to maintain focus and to play each match, each set, each point as if it would all make a difference in the end”.

“We came here to win the tournament”, Lee said. “It was a great performance”.

Canada’s men’s volleyball team capped the FIVB World Cup with a three-set victory over Tunisia on Wednesday, to finish seventh overall. Maxwell Holt then scored his 18 and final point on a monster kill to give the US the World Cup.

Even Erik Shoji got into the scoring act when his overhand dig from the back row fell on Argentina’s side with the USA leading 22-17 in the fourth set, but with Argentina making a charge.
