Police arrest 2 in shooting of Atlantic City police officer

The officer was out of surgery, but is still in critical condition, Sgt. Kevin Fair, a spokesman with the Atlantic City Police Department, said late Saturday morning.

According to Atlantic City police chief Henry White, three men opened fire on two police officers during a routine stop near the parking garage to Caesars Casino. The second officer returned fire and struck one suspect.

The wounded officer’s name wasn’t released.

Two arrest have been made in connection to the officer involved shooting in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He was identified as Jerome Damon, 25, of Camden.

On Thursday, Luis Maisonet, 55, of Somers Point, allegedly shot and killed Christopher Romero, 26, of Absecon, at the The Walk outlet mall in a domestic-related killing, police said.

The officer, who remains unnamed, was injured when he and another officer exited their vehicle while on duty to approach a group of suspects in a robbery near Caesars parking garage.

The Atlantic City Police Department, the New Jersey State Police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Pleasantville, Galloway, and Hammonton Police Departments are assisting in the search for the fugitives. Nineteen-year-old Martell Chisholm of Millville and 28-year-old Demetrius Cross of Bridgeton have been charged with two counts of attempted murder in the 1st degree, three counts of robbery in the 1st degree and related offenses.

The policeman was shot after he and his partner went to check on a group of people who they believed were “engaged in criminal activity” just after 2.30am on Saturday morning.

“It’s a sad commentary on society”, Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian said. He did not have further information to release on what the group was suspected of doing.

Police did not immediately return a call for further details.
