Brackeen, a K-9 officer, 12-year veteran of the Shelby Police Department and the married father of a daughter, was shot early Saturday while looking for a suspect with outstanding warrants, police said.
Officer Brackeen was attempting to serve a warrant on Fenner Saturday morning when the shooting happened. Police officers from neighboring departments paid their respects Tuesday as Brackeen’s body was taken from the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner to a funeral home in Shelby, NBC station WCNC reported.
Brackeen was looking for Fenner at 12:21 a.m. Saturday to serve a warrant on charges of robbery with a risky weapon.
Hamrick said she’s known Fenner for years. “They need to know that at the end of the day they do have love”, said Lesper.
Hamrick posted photos of Brackeen and Team Brackeen on her Facebook. Previously, he was wanted for armed robbery and kidnapping.
The warrants had been issued by the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office. “If he is, we would like to get him help”, Seate said.
Brackeen and Fenner had met before Saturday night. Ledford said Brackeen found Fenner at a home, where the two struggled before Brackeen was shot in the chest. Brackeen was wearing his bulletproof vest at the time of the shooting.
Shelby Police don’t know if Fenner is wounded because they haven’t seen him, Seate said.
Fenner was also convicted of assault of a Shelby PD law enforcement animal in July 2009, which was disposed of in August 2009.
“Tips are coming in from everywhere but none have panned out”, Seate said.
Gov. Pat McCrory announced Monday the state is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the shooting of Brackeen.
