Initially, Hossain went to the police on Sunday, 6 September, saying his maid had gone missing.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board has since suspended Shahadat from all forms of cricket until further notice.
Hossain’s lawyer, Kazi Nazibullah Hiru, told the court in Dhaka that the paceman was a national hero who should be released on bail because his country needed him on the Bangladesh side.
“We pleaded that he is not guilty as he was not present on the day the girl was allegedly beaten”. But several hours later, the 11-year-old girl surfaced to accuse the cricketer and his wife of torturing her regularly.
“She got her complaints recorded as we saw injury marks on her body and then sent her to the One Stop Crisis Centre of Dhaka Medical College Hospital immediately”, he said.
Shahadat Hossain, a bowler with the Bangladeshi national team, had been on the run with his wife since early last month.
The police arrested Nritto Shahadat from her parent’s house after carrying out a raid based on information that the couple were hiding there, but the cricketer could not be located.
Shahadat played 38 Tests and 51 one-day internationals for Bangladesh.
