It’s estimated that the tax would collect around $6 million every year.

The ordinance supporting the programs would enact a citywide tax on smokeless tobacco and cigars to generate funds to support both of the programs. The measure will be brought to the City Council this week.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is looking to raise the legal age for buying tobacco products in the city, according to reports.

Chicago Police Board president Lori Lightfoot said that they will weigh the concerns of the community and recommend the best candidate to the mayor.
