Those details emerged hours after police swarmed the UCLA campus in response to reports of an active shooter.
The suspect was described as a white male dressed in black, law enforcement officials said.
Rafi Sands, vice president of UCLA’s student government, told the Los Angeles Times that about 30 students used their belts to secure their classroom door after news of the shooter spread.
Both victims were found deceased at the scene. The violence was reported in the heart of the school’s campus.
“Police are investigating a shooting in Engineering IV”.
“A lot of people thought it was a joke or a drill”, she said.
UCLA’s student-run newspaper tweeted about the shooting around 10 a.m. PDT.
A campus official says two people have been shot at UCLA.
Scott Waugh, the university’s vice chancellor and provost, said classes would resume as normal on Thursday and next week’s final exams would not be disrupted.
Andy Neiman said he was not aware of the total number of victims or their conditions.
Campus media relations officer Rebecca Kendall says police are on scene Wednesday morning at Boelter Hall, a science building.
The campus is on lockdown.
Police are responding to a report of a possible shooter at the University of California, Los Angeles.
“We are getting messages from all over”, she told a Los Angeles Times reporter in a text message.
SWAT officers and dozens of squad cars filled the area as police tried to clear campus buildings floor by floor.
