The jury was considering allegations that Myerscough, a former academic at the University of East Anglia, downloaded child pornography and breached a sexual offences prevention order (SOPO).

The Irish police and the UK National Crime Agency are now arranging to bring Myerscough back to Britain.

Police are appealing for help in tracing a man who is wanted on a crown court warrant after absconding whilst on trial.

Myerscough, who is from the Manchester area but previously lived in Lowestoft, Suffolk, is believed to have left Ipswich on the 1.43pm train to London Liverpool Street.

He was identified as travelling on a ferry from Holyhead to Dublin at lunchtime yesterday and an alert was issued.

Myerscough was discovered in a city centre hotel on Friday morning.

All three items were found to have sick images of children, mainly in the form of videos, said Mr Brown. The images and films included boys and girls aged eight to 14 being sexually abused by other children and adults.

It is the second incident in which an on-the-run sex offender has been apprehended here in the space of a month. Mian Shahid was located after officers launched a media appeal.

The court also heard that the defendant did not expect a European Arrest Warrant to be fast-tracked in time for his arrest in Ireland, and he planned to board a Hungary-bound flight yesterday evening. A couple of days later he surrendered himself to United Kingdom authorities at the High Court. “It demonstrates that An Garda Siochana has a robust operational approach to transient sex offenders”, Detective Inspector Paul O’Brien from the Sex Offender Management and Intelligence Unit said today.
