Officers pulled the suspect, a balding man in red clothing, out of the vehicle through the passenger-side door.

Sergeant Robert Small arrived on scene and observed the man striking his own vehicle with the hatchet. He backed up but bounced off two cruisers and then another vehicle as the officers pinned the SUV against the curb. The pursuit eventually ended in New Bedford when officers were able to box him in.

During the pursuit the suspect was waving the hatchet and a knife out the window.

A man wielding a hatchet led police on a multi-town chase Monday afternoon that ultimately ended in New Bedford. Several attempts to stop the vehicle were unsuccessful.

It came to a conclusion when the driver stopped on the road near 2243 Purchase St. and tried to put the vehicle in reverse because of an oncoming police vehicle. He was taken into custody by the State Police.

Police say Harrison had a lighter and doused himself with butane at some point during the chase.

The chase didn’t exceed 60 miles per hour on the highway or 35 on Route 6, he said. Rochester Police have filed an immediate threat request with the registry to have his license suspended immediately.

Chief Magee said that the chase was primarily at low speeds. “That it didn’t is a credit to the discipline, technical expertise and bravery of all the involved troopers and officers”, Procopio said.
