Alamogordo Police Department Officer Clint Corvinus, 33, died Friday morning after being shot as he and another officer were in a foot pursuit of Joseph Moreno, 38, and Moreno turned and fired at them, Alamogordo Police Chief Daron Syling said during a news conference.
The deadly shooting at the hands of criminal suspect Joseph Moreno (pictured below) took place on Friday morning.
The Department of Corrections said that Moreno had been released from prison in February 2015 for time served.
The police officer death toll is rising across the country.
Clint Corvinus is the second New Mexico police officer killed in a shooting in less than a month. Another police officer was shot dead in New Mexico on Friday. It has not been revealed why the two officers were chasing Moreno in the small desert town. Police did not say who shot Moreno, and it wasn’t clear if there were other officers involved in the pursuit.
In a statement, the governor says she was saddened by the officer’s death and that violence against law enforcement in the state must end.
Online court records showed he was scheduled for trial in December on drug charges.
Flags were flown at half-staff at the Alamogordo police department after the shootout and mourners left flowers outside the building as law enforcement and members of the state’s congressional delegation issued statements in support of the fallen officer’s colleagues and families.
After the procession APD officers and their families came together to pray for Officer Corvinus and all officers. My deepest sympathies go out to his family, friends, and the Alamogordo Police Department.
A sheriff’s deputy was wounded Friday afternoon in Douglas County, Colorado, after officers were dispatched to deal with a “suicidal subject”, the sheriff’s department said in a news release.

The New Mexico police shooting has sent the community into mourning. Three weeks ago, authorities said an OH fugitive gunned down Officer Jose Chavez during a traffic stop in Hatch, a village about 100 miles west of Alamogordo that’s known for its green chile crop. The suspect, identified as Joseph Moreno, 38, had three outstanding arrest warrants and was scheduled to appear in court in December past year, according to the Albuquerque Journal.
