Police launch search after person goes over Niagara Falls

Police and fire crews were searching tonight for a woman who went over on the US side of Niagara Falls, officials said.

Park police told ABC affiliate WKBW of Buffalo they believe a woman in her 40s jumped into the Falls today at Prospect Point.

Authorities have not yet released any more information about the woman, or whether they are treating the search as a rescue or a recovery operation.

WIVB-TV reports it happened around 6 pm yesterday.

He says a police investigation is underway and rescuers were searching the area.

Emergency services are now scouring the river below the mammoth waterfall, which gushes six million cubic feet of water every minute at 70 miles per hour. Only four people are reported to have survived a fall with no physical protection.
