Police offer safety tips for back to school

Motorists are not required to stop for a bus if the bus is on the opposite side a median but should still remain alert for children. It’s the school bus.

Stop and yield the whole roadway at pedestrian crossovers, school crossings and other locations where there is a crossing guard.

School Bus, Inc. provides between 85 and 90 buses for students in the Sioux Falls School District, and those 14,000 students rely on buses to get them safely to and from school.

Steven Del Duca, Minister of Transportation, said: “Road safety is a top priority for our government”.

Motorists are also reminded to slow down in school zones.

Keep hands free, make sure shoes are tied before going up the bus steps.

With so many students heading back to school today, drivers will have to get used to following the rules of the road in front of schools. If the driver cannot be identified, the registered owner of the vehicle in violation may be charged.

Distracted driving is a leading cause of collisions on Ontario roads. The buses have security cameras, GPS tracking, technology that creates multi-point safety check routines and a system that forces drivers to check on and under each seat for any students still on the bus.
