A police officer popped the door open and got the dog out of the vehicle, the website reported. “We took her out, poured water on her. She was a little stunned”. The dog’s owner returned to the auto 12 minutes later.
A few minutes later the owner, a 50-year-old Demarest woman, came back to her auto with shopping bags from the CVS across the street, the captain said.
Tenafly police issued a warning, and the Bergen County SPCA confirmed that it picked up the case for potential animal cruelty charges.
DeMoncada said residents should call their local police departments if they see an animal locked in a hot auto.

The dog’s owner said she stopped briefly at a nearby store, according to police.
