Police Officers Shot, Gunman and Bystander Dead in Philly Ambush
Those wounded by a Philadelphia gunman who ambushed a police sergeant and killed a civilian before being shot dead by police Friday night, are recovering, authorities said.

Commissioner Richard Ross said 25-year-old Nicholas Glenn left behind a letter labeled “Doomed” that was full of “rantings” mostly about himself but also about his anger at his parole officer and police in general.
Glenn ran into an alley before a University of Pennsylvania police officer and two others from the city police cornered him.
A wild chase and shootout through the streets of the USA city of Philadelphia left two police officers and three civilians wounded, and a woman and the suspect fatally shot.
Ross said the gunman was carrying at least three magazines and multiple live rounds.
“Some civilians are not in good shape at all”, Ross said. “He was hellbent on hurting a lot of people”.
As he fled, the gunman fired multiple rounds into a white vehicle, striking a man and a woman.
Ross said police believe only the one gunman was involved in the violent events, which he described as “completely freaky”.
Authorities said the circumstances surrounding the shooting were unclear, KYW-TV reports.
Still, an official police Twitter account said early Saturday that the most recent shooting was the work of “an individual driven by hatred”. It all started around 11:20pm Friday on the 5200 block of Sansom Street. Young was shot up to eight times in her left arm and protective vest.
Police officer, Sergeant Sylvia Young, 46, was ambushed in her police auto. Young was saved by her body armor. She luckily survived thanks to her bulletproof vest.
“This is a completely freaky situation”, Ross said. Injured, all she could do was lean into the passenger seat to try to avoid the hail of gunfire, according to Philly.com.
Seconds later, she could be heard on the police radio: “I’m at the McDonald’s on 51st Street”, she yelled.
A rampage that ends with one women dead and five injured, two of which are police officers.
In January, a gunman in west Philadelphia shot and wounded an officer sitting in his police vehicle.
While fleeing the scene, the shooter fired into a bar and struck a security guard in the leg. A civilian woman – one of the four apparently random victims – has died. The shooter was then arrested and told investigators he “acted in the name of Islam” and “pledged his allegiance” to Islamic State (IS, former ISIS/ISIL), US media report.
He shot a 36-year-old man and his 25-year-old girlfriend who were riding in a 2011 Nissan Altima, striking the man in his arm and chest and the woman several times in her chest.
The bystanders in the vehicle, a man and a woman, were both hospitalized before the woman in her 20s was pronounced dead, The Inquirer reported. The 46-year-old Philadelphia police Sergeant Sylvia Young was the first person that Glenn gunned down near the University of Pennsylvania campus.
