Police protests resume in downtown Chicago

On the same day that Rahm Emanuel apologized for the police shooting of Laquan McDonald, a state lawmaker introduced a measure in Springfield, Illinois to recall the beleaguered Chicago mayor, according to ThinkProgress.

Some protesters have called for his resignation.

Sometimes the protesters were walking down Michigan Avenue, but they also would stop and sit down in the road.

“The protesters refuse to accept Mayor Emanuel’s attempts to placate the public in the aftermath of disclosures about the Mayor’s Office’s suppression of public release of information of the police murdering Laquan McDonald”. Emanuel referred to a “code of silence”.

“What they should have done, within days, once they realized there was a bad shoot, that none of the police reports matched the video cam, they should have been arrested”, Milan said.

Later that night, the city released yet another video showing an inmate being dragged out of his cell by his handcuffed wrists.

“We’re not the problem”, Holmes said. “It is important that citizens have the right to recall their representatives the elected officials”, said Rev. Gregory Livingston, Coalition for a New Chicago. “Rahm Emanuel for many of us is a cancer to Chicago”.

During a long news conference in which she summarized why Hernandez was justified in shooting Johnson in the back, on Monday, the video was released by Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez. “We’re not going to wait three years”.

Be Civil – It’s OK to have a difference in opinion but there’s no need to be a jerk. “They don’t trust the cops”. She kept reinforcing to the crowd that this would be a peaceful protest.

During the chase, Hernandez, at the time a tactical officer in the Wentworth Police District, pulled up in an unmarked squad vehicle and jumped out with his gun drawn, Oppenheimer said.

His Rahmea Culpa was OK, but not as good as the dramatic and heartfelt Richie Culpas of the Daley years, when former Mayor Richard Daley would get caught backing some corrupt and costly deal for his pals.

On Sunday, the New York Times reported the Justice Department (DOJ) will launch “a far-ranging investigation into the patterns and practices of the Chicago Police Department, part of the continuing fallout over a video released last month showing the police shooting of Laquan McDonald”. The protest, broadcast by local media, called for Emanuel’s resignation, as did hundreds of demonstrators who shut down city streets on Wednesday. The furor grew when the public learned about the other officers’ accounts.

Alderman Anthony Beale said Wednesday he was sorry about what happened to McDonald, a black teenager who was shot 16 times and killed by a white police officer. But Lorenzo Davis, IPRA’s original supervising investigator on the case, didn’t agree.

Johnson’s mother, Dorothy Holmes, told reporters she was upset with Alvarez’s decision and hoped a special prosecutor would be appointed to do a more thorough investigation. “It’s for any mayor that comes after him”, the Chicago-based legislator said. Police have come under more scrutiny. That video was released Monday during a presentation in which Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez said she would not charge the officer. “It is a whole other thing to build friendships and relationships, which are integral to fighting crime”.

Finally, Mayor Emanuel addressed what every Chicagoan can do to make communities safer, explaining that we cannot ask community members to respect police officers if police officers do not respect them in kind. The City Council Finance Committee approved a $1.25 million payout to Moore’s family in 2014. “This is the people’s house – this is not Rahm Emanuel’s house”.

“At this point – in this juncture in the city – he has become an issue rather than dealing with the issue”, he said. “It’s not enough. We’re going to see protests lead to unrest unless we see constructive change that leads to justice”. The next election – should he seek another term – isn’t until 2019.
