Senior Superintendent of Police, Rao Anwar after detaining the leader of Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan’s leader Khuwaja Izhar ul Hasan on Friday said that, Police do not need permission to arrest a parliamentarian, Aaj News reported. Party’s senior leader Farooq Sattar accompanied Hassan, but was not arrested. He added that the elected Muttahida leaders would approach the high court.

PM Nawaz expressed that no member of assembly should be arrested without prior information to speaker of the assembly.

SSP Malir Rao Anwar, who was suspended on the directives of Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, had said that Khawaja Izharul Hassan can not be released without court orders.

Police have been taking action against MQM leaders after party workers attacked media houses last month.

Former Malir SSP Rao Anwar had arrested the leader of the opposition in the Sindh Assembly following a raid at his house.

Sattar went on to add that police carried out the raid on the pretext that those responsible for May 12 mayhem were hiding there, but they could not recover anyone from there. Moments later, SSP Rao Anwaar led his team to arrest the opposition leader.

But Anwar, who has remained in the news also for his numerous encounters and gunning down of suspected militants on the outskirts of Karachi, was defiant in the face of his suspension.

He claimed that, Khuwaja Izhar is called the “chief” of target killers. “The issue is an enmity with the MQM and mohajirs”, he said. Later, talking to newsmen, the Sindh CM said that he had ordered the inspector-general of Sindh Police to conduct an inquiry as to why the MQM leader had been arrested.

The CM assured the premier that investigations of the arrest were underway, indicating that a relevant action will be taken as per law. The CM said that nobody would be allowed to erode the authority of the government as the issue was very serious.

The opposition leader was later transferred from the custody of Anwar at Malir police station and taken to the central police headquarters from where he was eventually released in the evening.

In a statement, additional IG Mustaq Maher said Hasan was released under Section 497-2B of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPc).
