Saskatchewan’s crime severity index (CSI) has seen an increase – it has jumped 10-percent between 2014 and 2015.

Police-reported crime in Calgary rose by 29 per cent past year, marking the largest increase in crime severity across the country, according to information released by Statistics Canada on Wednesday.

The index rose 2-percent in Saskatoon and 5-percent in Regina.

In 2005, Regina’s crime severity index ranked more than double the Canadian average, but in the last ten years the gap has shrunk to 54 per cent of the Canadian average.

National rates of police-reported crime increased for most Criminal Code violations, including attempted murder, firearms offences, homicide, robbery and sexual assault. This includes a 48 per cent drop in the crime severity index rating, second only to Halifax, NS, at 51 per cent. The high index figures in Western provinces, such as Alberta and Saskatchewan, “can be partly attributed to the relatively high number of incidents of breaking and entering”, Statistics Canada reported.
