Police held a news conference to say authorities investigating the disappearance of a couple from Easton, Connecticut, have found two sets of human remains in a yard on Norfield Road in neighboring Weston, state police said during a news conference on Friday afternoon.

The remains have been taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) which will confirm whether they are human or animal, and cause and manner of death if applicable.

The couple’s 27-year-old son, Kyle Navin, was arrested September 8 on a federal gun charge but has not been charged in connection with his parents’ disappearance.

In court, prosecutors said that Navin was the primary suspect in his parents’ disappearance based on previous evidence and the sudden appearance of human remains, and that he should remain detained for the gun charge. The house on the property is in disrepair, and has a tarp over it. Kerrigan called police at about 3 p.m., and an intensive investigation began.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Jeffrey Navin texted his son on August 4 saying he’s not going home until his knows Jeannette Navin is OK. Navin’s girlfriend, 31-year-old Jennifer Valiante, was arrested Friday night and charged with conspiracy to commit murder and hindering prosecution.

Neighbors in Weston said the area is typically quiet, but they noticed activity at the home around the time the couple went missing.

The father also asked Kyle if he had hurt his mother. Navin is charged with two counts of murder and murder with special circumstances.

“No absolutely not. Why would you think?” Jeffrey Navin, 56, is president of J&J Refuse in Westport.

Kyle Navin also told authorities he continued to contact his father via telephone that afternoon exclusively about work and his back injury. Police vehicles came and went from the scene throughout the morning, while at least one helicopter could be heard overhead.

Just a half hour before Jeffrey Navin’s phone is last registered as being used – at 12:57p.m. – there was another text message to his son: “U R setting me up”.

Then, the affidavit describes how they believe the Navins died: during a search of Kyle Navin’s blue 2000 Chevrolet K2500 on August 18, police found two bullet holes were in the front passenger seat. A search inside the home found nothing unusual, authorities said. The day after his parents vanished, Kyle Navin bought germicidal bleach, drain opener, stain remover and contractor cleanup bags, police said.

Arguing for his release, Riccio said Navin was employed, had no criminal record, had local ties in the community, and was cooperative with police.
